Opera Southwest is accepting applications for five singers in an Apprentice Artist Program.
Program Dates: August 29, 2024, through September 15, 2024
Application Deadline:
First Round – March 23, 2024 at midnight.
Second Round – April 21, 2024 at midnight.
Positions are open for singers to perform the roles in Carlo Coccia’s “Matilde, ossia una fatale supposizione” (sung in Italian) to be performed with the orchestra on September 13th, 14th, and 15th 2024.
Soprano Apprentice
- To sing the role of Matilde
Mezzo-Soprano or Soprano Apprentice
- To sing the role of Fiammetta
Tenor Apprentice
- To sing the role of Federico
Baritone Apprentice
- To sing the role of Dolibano
Basso Buffo Apprentice
- To sing the role of Pantarotto
For the first round of auditions, artists are invited to submit a video or audio of two contrasting arias, in Italian. The arias should be composed between 1760-1860. First-round videos must be submitted by March 23, 2024. Artists will be notified of first-round results by March 26th and chosen candidates will continue with a second round of auditions. For the second round of auditions, artists will be sent music and audio tracks for pieces in “Matilde.” Artists will have three weeks to learn the music and record it, either to the provided audio track or with a pianist. N.B. This opera has not been performed since the 1800s, and there are no recordings of it.
One round-trip domestic plane ticket, housing, local transportation, and a weekly stipend of $600 are provided.
Singers from outside the United States: If you do not have an existing work visa for the USA, we are unable to sponsor a visa or process your Opera Southwest apprentice application. A tourist visa cannot be used for this program.
