Bless Me Ultima Auditions
Opera Southwest, the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque and Opera Cultura in California, are holding Albuquerque auditions for leading and supporting roles in the February, 2018 world premiere professional production of Hector Armienta’s opera BLESS ME, ULTIMA based on the novel by Rudolfo Anaya. Auditions are open to operatic, zarzuela and music theater voices.
For this new opera, a workshop with the composer is scheduled for the singers involved. It will be held at the NHCC from April 25 through April 29, 2017. Scheduling tbd.
Rehearsals will begin Monday, January 22, 2018. Performances will be in the Journal Theatre on Sunday, February 18, 2018 @ 2:00 pm; Wednesday, February 21, 2018 @ 7:30 pm; Friday, February 23, 2018 @ 7:30 pm, and Sunday, February 25, 2018 @ 2:00 pm.
Auditions will be held on Sunday, March 12, 2017 from 1:00-5:00 at The First United Methodist Church, 315 Coal Ave SW, Albuquerque, NM 87102. Principal roles to be cast are The Owl (countertenor), Gabriel (high baritone/tenor), Maria (soprano), Narciso (baritone) and Tenorio (bass baritone). Numerous bit roles and chorus will also be cast at these auditions.
Special auditions for the role of Tony (boy soprano) will be held on Saturday, March 18 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, 1701 4th St SW, Albuquerque, NM 87102.
Like the novel, the opera is in a combination of both English and Spanish, but singers may audition with an art song, folk song, or a selection from opera, zarzuela or music theater in any language. However, sheet music must be provided for the accompanist.
